Mercor referral program: how it works and what to check

Home AI Training Platforms
Share on WhatsappShare on LinkedInShare on RedditShare on GPT

The Mercor referral program pays a referrer 20% of what the person they refer earns on Mercor, including hourly pay and bonuses, until an earnings cap is reached. The cap is set by the referred person’s first accepted offer, and work on one-time-payment listings does not count.

The Mercor referral program is a scheme that links a new person to the existing Mercor user whose referral link they claimed at sign-up. Mercor tracks each referral in a My Referrals dashboard.

This guide suits you if you want to know how referral earnings are worked out before you share a link or claim one. It is not for you if you want to know whether Mercor suits you, because our Mercor review covers that.

Checked: 18 Oct 2026. AI Trainers FAQ is independent. Platform rules change often, so check Mercor’s own referral policy and terms before you share a link.

TL;DR

  • A referrer earns 20% of the referred person’s earnings, including hourly pay and bonuses, up to a cap.
  • The cap is set by the first accepted offer that is not a one-time-payment listing.
  • For an hourly contract, Mercor sets the cap at four times that hourly rate.
  • Only people new to Mercor can be referred, and the first referrer is the one who counts.
  • A link can be used 100 times in a rolling 30 days.
  • A referred person can dispute the link, and the referrer then has 5 business days to show they know them.

Title card: how Mercor shares earnings with referrers.

How does the earnings share work?

Earning starts only when the referred person is hired and begins billable work. The 20% share then carries across every project they work on, except one-time-payment listings, and it stops at the earnings cap. Our guide to the Mercor application process explains what the referred person must finish first.

Mercor uses three terms in its policy, and each one changes the result.

  • Earnings share: the 20% that accrues from the referred person’s paid work.
  • Earnings cap: the most a referrer can earn from one referral. For hourly contracts it is four times the hourly rate, and for task or deliverable contracts it is set in the contract.
  • First accepted offer: the first offer the referred person accepts that is not a one-time-payment listing. That offer fixes the cap, and later projects do not change it.

Work through a Mercor referral program example

Try this one on paper before you read our answer.

Example (fictional): Asha refers her former colleague Ben. Ben’s first accepted offer is an hourly contract at an invented rate of $40 an hour. He works 10 hours in his first week and earns $400.

Work it out in three steps, because each step depends on the one before it.

  1. Find the cap: four times $40 is $160, so Asha can earn at most $160 from Ben.
  2. Find the weekly share: 20% of $400 is $80, so Asha’s share for that week is $80.
  3. Find the end point: Asha reaches $160 once Ben has earned $800, so after about 20 paid hours her earnings from Ben stop.

The cap, and not the share, decides the total. A later, better-paid project for Ben does not raise it.

What does not count as a referral?

Mercor names several cases that earn nothing. People already offered a contract or hired by Mercor cannot be referred, and a person linked to another referrer stays with the first one. Hours worked before the referral was recorded do not count, and neither does one-time-payment work.

Three more limits apply to the link itself.

  1. Claim window: the new person must claim your link soon after creating their account, generally within 7 days, and sooner if they submit an application first.
  2. Use limit: your link counts up to 100 uses in a rolling 30 days, and sign-ups beyond that are not credited to you.
  3. One account: self-referral and duplicate accounts are not allowed, and Mercor says both accounts are banned.

When does Mercor pay referral earnings?

Mercor releases referral earnings twice a week, on Wednesdays and Fridays at 12:00 PM Pacific time. Payouts go through Stripe in most countries and Wise where Stripe is not supported. Referrers must use their legal name and pass ID verification, because Mercor blocks payouts until verification is done.

What rules must a referrer follow?

Mercor’s terms require referral outreach to be lawful, consent-based and accurate, and they ban spam. You must not pretend to be Mercor or a Mercor recruiter, and a paid job ad must not use the Mercor name. Never promise pay, start dates or hours, because Mercor decides who is hired.

Warning: a person you referred can press “Not your referrer?” in their profile. You then have 5 business days to send evidence that you know each other, such as earlier messages, or the referral is removed. Refer people you actually know, and read our guide to whether AI training jobs are legit for the signs of a pushy referral pitch.

Decide whether to refer or apply

If you plan to refer, read Mercor’s referral terms in full first, and then share your link only with people you have worked or studied with. If you want to work on Mercor yourself, browse open Mercor roles Referral link and read the listing requirements before you apply.

Referral earnings depend on paid work, so the most useful thing you can give a friend is an honest account of the application.

Is there a limit on how many people I can refer?

Yes. Mercor says your referral link counts up to 100 uses in a rolling 30 days, and each use drops off 30 days after it happened. Sign-ups after you reach 100 are not credited to you until earlier uses expire, so sharing widely adds little.

Do I earn more if my referral joins several projects?

No, not beyond the cap. You earn 20% across all of their projects except one-time-payment listings, but the total stops at the cap set by their first accepted offer. A higher rate on a later project does not raise that cap, because Mercor locks it to the first offer.

What if someone I do not know used my link?

The person can dispute it with the "Not your referrer?" button in their profile. Mercor then gives you 5 business days to show earlier contact or familiarity. Without evidence, the referral is removed and you earn nothing from that person, so the program works best with people you know.

Can I use a company name as the referrer?

No. Mercor says you must use your legal name exactly as it appears on your ID, because referrers go through ID verification. Payouts are blocked until that verification is complete, so finish it early if you plan to refer anyone.
