Mercor review (2026): how it works and who qualifies

Home AI Training Platforms
Share on WhatsappShare on LinkedInShare on RedditShare on GPT

Based on Mercor’s own help pages, this Mercor review finds the platform worth trying if you have expert skills, a suitable computer and a country on its payment list.

Mercor is an AI training platform that matches experts with paid contract projects through AI interviews and assessments.

This review suits you if you have clear skills in a field and a Windows or Mac computer that runs Mercor’s time-tracking app. It is not for you if you want a human interviewer, detailed feedback on every attempt or guaranteed hours.

This post contains affiliate links.

Checked: 16 Oct 2026. AI Trainers FAQ is independent. Platform rules change often, so check Mercor’s own pages before you apply.

TL;DR

  • Mercor matches experts with contract projects after AI interviews and assessments that carry over between applications.
  • Check Mercor’s payment country list first, because it cannot onboard you anywhere outside it.
  • Most interviews take about 20 minutes, and you get up to three official retakes.
  • Pay is in US dollars, weekly, through Stripe Connect or Wise.
  • Most projects require Insightful, which does not run on Chromebooks, iPads or phones.

What this guide covers, section by section.

Work types and eligibility

Mercor posts listings from clients who need experts to help train and test AI models, and each listing sets its own requirements. Three checks decide whether Mercor fits you.

Contributor work

Mercor’s listings cover expert work such as writing hard problems for models, writing correct solutions and reviewing model answers. Some programs use rubrics, which are scoring guides that you write or apply.

Required expertise

Some roles ask for proven expertise, such as years of experience, and the listing says so. Mercor says every applicant for a role goes through the same assessments, so prepare for them as carefully as you prepare your resume.

Residence and payment checks

Mercor publishes a list of countries where it can pay experts, and it says it cannot onboard experts or issue contracts anywhere that is not on that list. Check your country first, because a strong application cannot get around this rule. Most countries are paid through Stripe Connect, and a few, such as the United Arab Emirates and Brazil, through Wise. Your bank account must be in your own legal name.

Application and onboarding

Mercor’s process has five stages, covered in our step-by-step Mercor application guide. You can complete most steps in any order.

Illustration for this Mercor review: a laptop with a webcam and a headset on a desk, with thin blue corner brackets around the camera and the microphone

Generated illustration: check your camera, microphone and computer before the AI interview.

Profile

You create a Mercor account and upload your resume, which Mercor stores for future applications. Mercor asks for a text-based PDF of one to two pages under 2 MB, with clear headings and no tables or images, so its system can read it.

Screenings

Each listing shows a checklist of steps, such as a resume, work authorisation, an AI interview and a written assessment. Completed steps carry over to other applications, so you only do each one once. Passing a recommended assessment can also put you forward for roles that use it.

Most assessments allow only one submission, so read every instruction before you start.

Interview

Mercor’s AI interviewer asks role-specific questions, records your answers and evaluates them. Most interviews take about 20 minutes, and they are in English unless the listing says otherwise. Use Google Chrome on a computer with a working camera and microphone, because mobile browsers and Firefox are not supported.

A free Practice Interview is available as often as you like, and you can retake an official interview up to three times. Mercor does not offer a human interview instead. Read our guide to AI trainer interview preparation before your first attempt.

Matching

A hiring team may then offer you a paid work trial or a contract. Mercor pays for one work trial per person, and a typical trial takes about four to six hours without guaranteeing a contract. Mercor can also send Instant Work Offers when your results and availability match a role.

Project setup

To accept an offer, you sign the terms and a confidentiality agreement, set up payments and complete any checks the project needs. Most projects then require Insightful, a desktop time-tracking app that runs on Windows 10 or later and macOS 11 or later. It does not run on Chromebooks, iPads or phones, so check your computer before you apply.

Pay basis, availability and limitations

No pay rates appear in this Mercor review, because each listing and contract sets its own. The three parts below cover pay basis, hours and limits.

Pay basis

Mercor uses two main contract types. Hourly contracts pay for hours tracked in Insightful, up to a weekly cap. Deliverable-based contracts pay a fixed amount once all the agreed work is submitted and approved. Contracts are in US dollars. Mercor processes hourly pay weekly for the previous work week, and Stripe holds your first payout for seven days.

Availability

Each hourly contract has a weekly cap that the project team sets. Listings can close at any time, and projects end when the client’s work is done, so plan for weeks with fewer hours.

Limitations

Four limits affect how the work fits your life.

  • Time tracking: Insightful may take screenshots, and a reviewer can remove idle hours.
  • AI tools: Mercor’s rules forbid using a language model to assess model responses or write your explanations, although grammar checks are allowed.
  • Confidentiality: you cannot share client names, task content or screenshots, including on social media.
  • Feedback: Mercor does not usually explain a rejection, so you may not learn why an application failed.

Comparison and alternatives

The table below compares Mercor with micro1 and Mindrift on three points that matter to beginners. Our micro1 review, micro1 vs Mercor comparison and Mercor vs Outlier comparison go further.

Evidence for this Mercor review

Everything in this review is based on Mercor’s own published help pages, not first-hand project work. We checked those pages on 16 Oct 2026 and list them in the Sources section below.

Mercor Academy offers free, self-paced courses with a certificate, and Mercor says a certificate does not guarantee a project.

Warning: Mercor says it never charges fees and that its official emails end in @mercor.com. If anyone asks you to pay to apply or to set up payments outside Mercor’s own site, do not pay, because that request is not from Mercor.

Apply or prepare

Take the free Practice Interview first, and check that your country is on Mercor’s payment list. When you are ready, create your Mercor account and browse open listings Referral link, and start with the one that best matches your skills.

Completed steps carry over between applications, so the work you put into your first interview and assessment keeps counting for later roles.

Is Mercor legit?

Yes. Mercor is a real company that hires experts for AI training projects, and it publishes its process, pay schedule and policies in its own help pages. Mercor says it never charges fees and that its official emails end in @mercor.com, so check the sender before you act on any message.

How long is the Mercor AI interview?

Most Mercor interviews take about 20 minutes, although Mercor says some are shorter or longer. You can take a free Practice Interview first, as many times as you like, and Mercor says practice attempts are not shared with companies. Use Chrome on a computer with a working camera and microphone.

Can I apply from my phone?

No, not for the full process. You can browse listings on a phone, but Mercor's interviews need Chrome on a desktop or laptop, and mobile browsers are not supported. Most projects also use Insightful for time tracking, and it does not run on phones, iPads or Chromebooks.

How does Mercor pay?

Mercor pays weekly through Stripe Connect or Wise, depending on your country. Contracts are in US dollars, and your provider converts the money into your local currency. Stripe holds your first payout for seven days, and after that, payouts follow Mercor's regular weekly schedule.

Can I retake the AI interview?

Yes. Mercor allows up to three retakes across all applications that use the same interview. Hiring managers can see your retake count, and a retake resets your application progress. Save retakes for technical problems, and use the free Practice Interview to rehearse instead.
