The Mercor application process has five stages: build your profile, apply to a listing, complete its screening steps, take a work trial or receive an offer, and set up your contract.
Mercor is an AI training platform that matches your resume, AI interview and assessments to what each client needs.
This guide suits you if you have professional experience in a field and a Windows or Mac computer. It is not for you if your country is not on Mercor’s payment list, because Mercor cannot issue contracts there.

TL;DR
- Check Mercor’s payment country list and your computer before you apply.
- Upload a simple, text-based PDF resume of one to two pages.
- Most AI interviews take about 20 minutes.
- Completed steps carry over to other applications.
- A paid work trial usually takes four to six hours and does not guarantee a contract.

What this guide covers, section by section.

Before you apply
Complete these three checks first.
- Check that your country is on Mercor’s list of countries where it can pay experts.
- Check that you have a Windows 10 or later or macOS 11 or later computer, because most projects use the Insightful time-tracking app.
- Read the listing’s location line, because some listings accept only certain regions.
The five stages of the Mercor application process
Work through the five stages in order, and see our Mercor review too.
Stage 1: build your profile
You create a Mercor account and upload your resume. Mercor asks for a text-based PDF of one to two pages, under 2 MB.
Stage 2: apply to a listing
Each listing describes the work and its requirements. Apply to listings that match your field.
Stage 3: complete the screening steps
Each listing shows a checklist, such as a resume, work authorisation, an AI interview and a written assessment. Completed steps carry over to other applications, so you only do each step once.
Mercor’s AI interview asks role-specific questions, and most take about 20 minutes. Use Google Chrome on a computer with a camera and microphone. Take the free Practice Interview first, and read our guide to AI trainer interview preparation.
Most written assessments allow only one submission.

Stage 4: work trial or offer
A hiring team may offer you a paid work trial, which usually takes four to six hours, or go straight to a contract. Mercor pays for one work trial per person, and a trial does not guarantee a contract.
Stage 5: set up your contract
To accept an offer, you sign the terms and a confidentiality agreement, set up payments through Stripe Connect or Wise and install Insightful if the project uses it. Our guide to AI trainer onboarding covers your first weeks.
Show your experience well
Present your experience so Mercor’s system and hiring teams can read it quickly, and compare platforms in our micro1 vs Mercor comparison.
- Lead with your field: put your profession, years of experience and specialist areas at the top of the resume.
- Name real results: describe specific projects or outcomes, because concrete detail is easier to match than general claims.
- Keep the format simple: use plain headings and text, because tables and images can stop Mercor’s system reading the file.
- Speak from experience: in the interview, answer with real examples from your work, so your expertise is clear to the hiring team reviewing it.
Example (fictional): A structural engineer with 12 years of experience leads her resume with “Structural engineer, steel and concrete design”. In the AI interview, she explains one real design review step by step.
Our guide to the domain expert AI resume shows how to rewrite a resume for this kind of work.
Rules to know
Four rules apply from your first application.
- AI tools: Mercor forbids using a language model to assess model responses or write your explanations, although grammar checks are allowed.
- Retakes: you can retake an official interview up to three times, and hiring managers can see your retake count.
- Feedback: Mercor does not usually explain a rejection.
- Confidentiality: you cannot share client names, task content or screenshots, including on social media.
Warning: Mercor says it never charges fees and that its official emails end in @mercor.com, so do not pay anyone who asks for money to apply.

Start your application
Update your resume as a simple one to two page PDF, and take the free Practice Interview once. When you are ready, create your Mercor account and browse open listings Referral link, and apply to the one that best matches your experience.
Your results carry over, so one strong application keeps working for later listings.
How long does the Mercor application take?
Most Mercor AI interviews take about 20 minutes, and written assessments vary by listing. A paid work trial, if a hiring team offers one, usually takes four to six hours of work. Steps you complete once carry over to later applications.
Can I apply with no degree?
Yes, for some listings. Mercor sets requirements in each listing, and some roles ask for years of experience or advanced knowledge rather than naming a degree. Read each listing's requirements before you apply, and lead your resume with the experience it names.
Do I have to redo the interview for every listing?
No. Mercor says each unique interview only needs to be completed once, and an existing result is kept when another application needs the same interview. A listing that needs a different interview will ask for that one, and you can retake an official interview up to three times.
Will Mercor tell me why I was rejected?
Usually not. Mercor does not usually share specific feedback after a rejection, and it cannot share interview recordings or transcripts. Keep your own notes after every attempt you make, and use the free Practice Interview to rehearse before you apply again.
