AI Trainers FAQ

Mercor vs Outlier for first-time domain experts

Home AI Training Platforms
Share on WhatsappShare on LinkedInShare on RedditShare on GPT

Mercor vs Outlier comes down to how you prefer to prove your skills. Choose Mercor if you can explain your field clearly in a recorded AI interview. Choose Outlier if you hold at least an associate degree and prefer written assessments, project by project.

Mercor is an AI training platform that matches experts with contract projects through AI interviews and assessments. Outlier, run by Scale AI, qualifies you through skill screenings and project tests.

This comparison suits you if you are a first-time domain expert choosing where to apply. It is not for you if you only have a phone, because both platforms expect a computer for the main steps.

Checked: 16 Oct 2026. AI Trainers FAQ is independent. Platform rules change often, so check Mercor’s and Outlier’s own pages before you apply.

TL;DR

  • Mercor starts with a listing or assessment and an AI interview of about 20 minutes.
  • Outlier starts with 30 to 90 minutes of onboarding, then a test for each project.
  • Both pay weekly: Mercor through Stripe Connect or Wise, Outlier through PayPal, Airtm or ACH.
  • Mercor’s Insightful tracker does not run on Chromebooks, iPads or phones.
  • Neither platform guarantees hours.

Who each platform suits

Mercor and Outlier look for different first-time experts, and our Mercor review and Outlier review cover each one.

Mercor

Mercor posts listings from clients that need experts, and some roles ask for years of experience or advanced knowledge. It suits you if you can explain your field clearly out loud, because the AI interview records your answers for hiring teams.

Outlier

Outlier asks for at least an associate degree, and some projects ask for a bachelor’s, master’s or PhD degree. It suits you if you prefer written tests, because you qualify for each project through its guidelines and assessment tasks.

How you get in

Mercor and Outlier differ most in their entry steps.

Mercor

You upload a one to two page PDF resume and apply to a listing that shows a checklist of steps. Most AI interviews take about 20 minutes and need Chrome on a computer with a camera and microphone. You can take a free Practice Interview first, and completed steps carry over to later applications. A hiring team may then offer you a paid work trial or a contract.

Outlier

You create an account, pick your areas of expertise and upload a resume and LinkedIn profile. Outlier says this general onboarding takes 30 to 90 minutes, including skill screenings and an ID check with a phone from your country. Each project then has its own guidelines and assessment.

Example (fictional): A civil engineer rehearses two short stories about bridge design for Mercor’s interview, and he reads Outlier’s project guidelines twice before its written assessment.

Pay and payouts

Both platforms pay weekly, but the payout methods differ.

  • Mercor: releases hourly pay every Wednesday through Stripe Connect or Wise, depending on your country. Contracts are in US dollars, and Stripe holds your first payout for seven days.
  • Outlier: pays on Tuesdays for the previous Tuesday to Monday, through PayPal, Airtm or ACH bank transfer, and shows the rate before you start.

Check that your bank or wallet works with at least one method.

Hours and tools

Neither platform guarantees hours, because both depend on client demand.

Illustration for this Mercor vs Outlier comparison: a laptop, a tablet and a phone laid out on a desk, with thin blue corner brackets around the laptop only

Generated illustration: Mercor’s time tracker runs on Windows and macOS computers only.

Mercor sets a weekly cap on each hourly contract and tracks time through Insightful, which runs on Windows 10 or later and macOS 11 or later but not on Chromebooks, iPads or phones. Insightful may take screenshots, and reviewers can remove idle hours.

Outlier says there are no minimum hours and you do not have to accept every invitation. Plan your budget around quiet weeks on both platforms.

How to prepare for each

Mercor and Outlier test different things first.

Preparing for Mercor

Take the free Practice Interview until you can explain your work in calm, clear sentences, because the official interview is recorded for hiring teams. Check your camera, microphone and Chrome browser the day before.

Preparing for Outlier

Make your resume and LinkedIn profile tell the same story, because Outlier asks for both. Before each project assessment, read the guidelines from start to finish, because small rules often decide the result.

Which one to choose

Three situations cover most first-time experts, so find the one that matches you.

  • You have senior experience and speak about it well: start with Mercor, because its interview and listings focus on proven expertise.
  • You only have a Chromebook or tablet: start with Outlier, because Mercor’s time-tracking app does not run on those devices.
  • You prefer written tests to speaking on camera: start with Outlier, because its general onboarding has no AI interview and each project uses written assessment tasks.
  • You live in a country on both lists: apply to both, and prepare the Mercor interview and the Outlier assessment separately.

For more options, read our guides to the best AI training platforms for domain experts and AI domain expert jobs.

Warning: neither platform charges you to apply. If someone asks for a fee or offers to sell you an account, do not pay, because both platforms verify your identity before you work.

Pick your first platform

Check your device and country against both platforms today, and apply to the one that fits. Before you upload anything, read our guide to the domain expert AI resume.

Both platforms reuse what you submit, Mercor across listings and Outlier across its projects, so a careful first application keeps paying off.

Can I work on Mercor and Outlier at the same time?

Yes, as far as we could find. We found no published rule on either platform that stops you from joining the other. Read each contract for limits on hours and confidentiality, and keep each platform's guidelines separate, so you never mix up their rules.

Which one is better for a first-time expert?

Mercor suits experts who explain their work well out loud, and Outlier suits those who prefer written assessments. Your device and country may decide for you, because Mercor's tracker needs Windows or macOS and both platforms publish country lists. Check both lists before you choose.

Does Outlier have an AI interview?

No, not in its published onboarding. Outlier's general onboarding uses skill screenings, an identity check and then project assessments, not a recorded AI interview. Some projects may add their own steps, so read each project's guidelines before you start its assessment tasks.

What happens if I fail the Mercor interview?

You can retake an official Mercor interview up to three times across all applications. Hiring managers see your retake count, and a retake resets your application progress. Use the free Practice Interview to rehearse before each attempt, so your retakes go on fixing problems rather than nerves.
