AI Trainers FAQ

micro1 vs Mercor: interview and work matching (2026)

Home AI Training Platforms
Share on WhatsappShare on LinkedInShare on RedditShare on GPT

micro1 vs Mercor comes down to how you like to apply and get paid. Choose micro1 if you want one interview that can carry forward to later roles. Choose Mercor if you want weekly pay and many listings to choose from.

micro1 is an AI training platform that matches experts with projects after an interview with Zara, its AI recruiter.

This comparison suits you if you have a clear skill and can work as a part-time contractor. It is not for you if you want a platform with no interview.

Checked: 16 Oct 2026. AI Trainers FAQ is independent. Platform rules change often, so check micro1’s and Mercor’s own pages before you apply.

TL;DR

  • Both use a recorded AI interview of approximately 20 to 40 minutes.
  • Both reuse your past results for later roles.
  • micro1 pays twice a month through Deel, and Mercor pays weekly through Stripe Connect or Wise.
  • Mercor publishes one payment country list, while micro1 sets location rules role by role.
  • Neither platform guarantees hours or charges a fee to apply.

micro1 vs Mercor: side-by-side summary

The table below compares the two platforms on six points. It gives no pay rates, because each role or contract sets its own.

How you apply

micro1 starts from a role, and Mercor from a listing or an assessment. Our micro1 review and Mercor review cover each in full.

micro1

You apply to a role on micro1’s Opportunities Portal, and each role names the skills it needs. Zara’s interview then tests those skills. If you meet the certification criteria, you verify your ID and join micro1’s certified talent pool.

Mercor

You upload your resume and apply to a listing, which shows a checklist such as work authorisation, an AI interview and a written assessment. Completed steps carry over to later applications.

The AI interview

Both platforms use an AI interviewer and record your answers. Read our guide to AI trainer interview preparation before either one.

Illustration for this micro1 vs Mercor comparison: a desk microphone and a laptop webcam side by side on a desk, with thin blue corner brackets around each device

Generated illustration: both platforms use a recorded AI interview.

micro1’s Zara

Zara asks open-ended questions that you answer out loud. micro1 says the Zara interview takes about 20 to 40 minutes, or roughly 7 minutes per skill. Zara reuses skills you certified from July 2025 onward, so a later role may skip your interview.

Mercor’s interviewer

Mercor’s AI interviewer asks role-specific questions, and most interviews take about 20 minutes. You need Chrome on a computer with a camera and microphone. A free Practice Interview is available, and official retakes are capped at three.

Example (fictional): A tax adviser rehearses one tax rule in Mercor’s Practice Interview, then explains it in her micro1 interview.

Pay and payouts

Both platforms pay in US dollars, but the schedules and providers differ.

  • micro1: pays twice a month through Deel, around the 20th and the 5th.
  • Mercor: processes hourly pay weekly through Stripe Connect or Wise, and Stripe holds your first payout for seven days.

Use the same legal name on your ID, profile and bank account, because Deel and Stripe each check identity.

Hours and project fit

Neither platform guarantees hours. micro1 describes its roles as part-time, at approximately 15 to 20 hours a week, depending on the client. Mercor sets a weekly cap on each hourly contract.

micro1 says it tries to move you onto another available pipeline when one ends, and Mercor can send Instant Work Offers when your results match a role.

Rules that affect your work

Four rules differ enough to change your choice.

  1. Location: Mercor publishes a payment country list, while micro1 sets location rules role by role.
  2. Equipment: Mercor’s Insightful app needs Windows 10 or later or macOS 11 or later, while micro1 asks you to use your own laptop.
  3. AI tools: Mercor forbids using a language model to write your explanations.
  4. Feedback: micro1 offers detailed feedback after a “Did not qualify” result, while Mercor does not usually explain a rejection.

Which one to choose

Three situations cover most readers, so find the one that matches you.

  • You want one strong interview that carries forward: start with micro1, because certified skills can shorten later interviews.
  • You want weekly pay and many listings to choose from: start with Mercor, because each listing shows its own steps and pay schedule.
  • You cannot decide: prepare one skill well and apply to both, because neither platform asks you to choose only one. Rehearse in Mercor’s free Practice Interview before either official interview.

If Mercor fits you better, browse open Mercor listings Referral link and start with the one closest to your field. For more options, read our guide to the best AI training platforms.

Warning: neither platform charges a fee to apply. If anyone asks you to pay for an interview, a contract or a faster review, do not pay, because both platforms run these steps through their own sites.

Pick your first platform

Prepare one skill you can explain clearly out loud, because both interviews test how you think and communicate. Then find a micro1 role that matches your skills Referral link and read its requirements.

A result that reads “Did not qualify” on micro1 comes with detailed feedback, so your first interview teaches you something whatever the outcome.

Can I join micro1 and Mercor at the same time?

Yes. We found no published rule on either platform that stops you from joining the other. Read each contract before you sign, because contracts can set limits on hours and confidentiality. Never share task details from one platform with the other.

Which platform is better for beginners?

Neither is a beginner platform, because both test real skills in a recorded AI interview. If you are just starting out, build one skill you can explain clearly first. Our guide to AI trainer jobs with no experience lists platforms with easier first steps.

Which one pays faster?

Mercor pays more often. It processes hourly pay weekly, while micro1 pays twice a month through Deel, around the 5th and the 20th. Stripe holds your first Mercor payout for seven days. Your own contract sets the exact terms on either platform, so read it before you start.

Do both use AI interviews?

Yes. micro1 uses Zara, its AI recruiter, and Mercor uses its own AI interviewer. Both record your answers so people can review them. Mercor also offers a free Practice Interview, and micro1 sends detailed feedback if your result reads "Did not qualify".

Do I need a computer?

Yes, for both. Mercor's interview needs Chrome on a computer with a camera and microphone, and its Insightful app needs Windows 10 or macOS 11 or later. micro1 asks you to work on your own laptop, because it does not supply devices.
